Former Arsenal star Perry Groves has urged the club to support Danny Welbeck by handing the player a new contract after he suffered a shocking injury in the Europa League on Thursday night.The England striker is out of contract with the Gunners in the summer, but he could now be out for the rest of the season after suffering a suspected broken ankle.2

It looks like Welbeck has broken his ankle, with Unai Emery calling it ‘the worst news’

Welbeck left the pitch on a stretcher wearing a protective boot and was rushed to hospital having landed awkwardly during the Gunners 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon.The result saw Arsenal progress to the knock-out stages of the competition, but the mood on the night was tempered by Welbeck’s sickening injury.Manager Unai Emery confirmed following the match the forwards problem is very serious.And ex-Gunner Groves believes it would be a magnificent gesture if Arsenal offered Welbeck a one-year contract extension to ensure he undergoes his injury rehabilitation with the club.Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White on Friday, the former winger said: I think Arsenal should come out now and say theyre going to give him a contract extension.2
