Police officers went into the away end to try to defuse the situation but then clashed with Ajax supporters, leaving some of them caked in blood.Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt ran over to the visiting fans in an attempt to play the role of peacemaker.The match kicked off as normal but at the start of the second half there were further crowd disturbances as several firecrackers were set off.Players from both sides were seen to be rubbing their eyes as smoke drifted across the stadium.According to Dutch news outletNU, at least eight Ajax fans were left injured by the shocking incidents.Police clashed with visiting fans at the Athens Olympic Stadium2

The trouble comes just three days after the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between Argentinian rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate was postponed because of fan violence.Ajax went on to seal a 2-0 victory, with former Southampton man Dusan Tadic scoring both the goals.The win saw the Dutch giants book a place in thelast 16 of the Champions League for the first time since 2005.AEK are bottom of Group E having failed to pick up a single point from their five group matches.
